Instructor Statement:
I believe all human beings have a need for story in their lives, and all human beings have stories to tell. As a teacher, my primary goal is to help novice writers find their voices and identify the personal stories that only they can tell. On a practical level, I like to introduce the building blocks of classic narrative structure and the concept of character archetypes, then encourage students to explode and re-imagine those conventions as needed to bring their stories to life. Most importantly, I believe that writing classes should be fun, safe places for storytelling and self-discovery, a narrative gym of sorts where amorphous story ideas get shaped and sculpted.
