John W. Carter, PhD

Instructor in Psychology

 

Dr. Carter is excited to teach psychology at UCLA Extension starting in the Spring of 2017, having attended UCLA Extension himself in the mid-1990s between college and graduate school.

Dr. Carter received his BA in Comparative Religion from Pomona College and his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern California.  At USC, he completed extensive training in both quantitative and qualitative research, logged many hours counseling diverse client populations, and developed original research in the areas of counseling supervision, schizophrenia, and emotion.  His dissertation is titled A Phenomenological Topology of Positive Interpersonal Emotions.

Dr. Carter was an Assistant Professor at the University of West Georgia, where he developed and taught 15 undergraduate and graduate courses, including Introductory Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Research Methods.  He served as the Acting Therapeutic Training Coordinator for the clinical Masters program at UWG, was the Psychology Department’s representative on the Faculty Senate, and was the Webmaster for Division 24 of the American Psychological Association.  He received a Faculty Research Grant from UWG to further develop his research in the area of positive interpersonal emotions.  Currently, he is collaborating with a team of Danish psychiatrists on research to improve the accuracy of early schizophrenia diagnosis.

In addition to his academic work, he has ten years of experience in the market research industry.  This work applies psychological scientific principles to real-world business problems.  He was the U.S. Project Director for Horizon Consumer Science, and is now President of his own consulting company, Carter Strategic Research.
