About This Course

With over 100 M.F.A. in Creative Writing programs available to choose from across the country (and beyond) each with its own application system and offers, this 3-hour webinar will help narrow the choices down for those looking to submit applications to M.F.A.s in fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. Are we looking to focus on writing for a concentrated period, nurturing community, or obtaining a terminal degree for a career change? Do we need financial assistance, genre specific concentrations, or a low residency program? We’ll look at what it means to create a resonating portfolio of writing samples in the appropriate field, how to brainstorm and craft your personal statement reflecting why this M.F.A. and why now, while showcasing your writing style and intention. Lecture will be provided using excerpts from successful past applicants to top M.F.A. programs, along with tips and advice from various M.F.A. program directors, including the Writers’ Program’s partner, Antioch University. You’ll also complete a writing exercise on drafting your personal statement essay.
