About This Course
The Endless Summer is a 1966 American surf documentary that transformed surfing from a niche pastime into a global phenomenon. In this course, we view selected film clips of surfers Robert August and Mike Hynson travelling around the world in search of the perfect wave. Bruce Brown directed, produced, edited and narrated this immersive and meditative portrait of the sport of surfing, and we discuss how he elevated surfing to a poetic saga of athleticism and artistry, reshaping Hollywood’s cartoonish "surfploitation" films with an aspirational vision of surf culture. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for 30 days.
