About This Course
Alfred Hitchcock’s pulse-pounding films set a high bar for suspense, yet several other classic Hollywood thrillers rival the master’s lofty achievements. A few gifted filmmakers took the stylistic elements Hitchcock pioneered and built upon them—or charted their own distinctive paths—to deliver gripping and insightful entertainment in his grand tradition. In this course, we view and analyze five of those films: The Stranger (1946), directed by the incomparable Orson Welles (who also plays the villain), mirrors Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by embedding a vicious psychopath within a charming, all-American town, culminating in a ticking-clock climax. Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution (1957), nominated for six Academy Awards, is a masterful courtroom drama that arguably surpasses Hitchcock’s own trial film, The Paradine Case (1947). Charade (1963), starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, has long been called “the best Hitchcock movie he never made” thanks to director Stanley Donen’s flair for humor and breathless pacing. In Wait Until Dark (1967), Hepburn plays a blind woman trapped in her apartment by a ruthless killer, rendering her character seemingly even more vulnerable than wheelchair-bound James Stewart in Rear Window (1954). Finally, The Fugitive (1993), starring Harrison Ford, takes the classic “innocent-man-on-the-run” archetype defined in The 39 Steps (1935) and North by Northwest (1959) to spectacular new heights. Ultimately, this course deepens our admiration for Hitchcock’s foundational work, even as we celebrate other suspense classics and analyze the enduring appeal of the genre.
